Privacy policy

Who we are

KjøleSmart is an iOS app that helps you save money on groceries and reduce food waste. It is developed and operated by Mohammad Samimi, an individual developer based in Norway ("we", "us"). We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.

Information we collect

Account information

• Email address and password when you create an account. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never visible to us in plain text.
• Name and email via Sign in with Apple, if you choose that sign-in method. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email" option, we only receive the private relay address Apple generates for you.

Content you add to the app

• Fridge items and their expiry dates
• Shopping lists
• Meal plans
• Saved recipes
• Your in-app activity history and preferences (such as household size, dietary restrictions and notification settings)

Photos you scan

When you use AI receipt scanning, the photo of your receipt is sent securely to our server function, forwarded to OpenAI for text extraction, and then discarded. Receipt photos are never saved, not in our database, not in any file storage, and not by the app beyond the original photo in your own camera roll. Only the list of grocery items extracted from the receipt is kept, and only after you have reviewed and confirmed it.

When you scan a product barcode, only the barcode number is used to look up product information. No photo is captured or transmitted.

Usage data

We record basic, first-party usage events (for example, that a recipe was generated or an item was added) in our own database to understand how the app is used and to improve it. We do not use any third-party analytics or tracking tools, and we do not use advertising identifiers.

What we do not collect

• No location data. The app never requests or uses your device's location.
• No contacts. We never access your address book.
• No advertising or tracking. The app contains no ads, no ad networks, and no cross-app tracking.

How we use your information

• To provide the app's core features: your fridge, shopping lists, meal plans, savings overview and recipes
• To provide AI features: generating recipe suggestions from your fridge contents and current grocery deals, and extracting items from receipt photos
• To manage your subscription and unlock Pro features
• To send you expiry reminders, if you turn them on. These notifications are scheduled locally on your device, so no notification data leaves your phone
• To understand usage and improve the app
• To respond when you contact support

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with anyone for marketing purposes.

AI processing

Two features use OpenAI's services:

• Receipt scanning: your receipt photo is sent to OpenAI to extract the items on it.
• Recipe suggestions: a list of your fridge items, current grocery deals and your food preferences is sent to OpenAI to generate recipe ideas.

This data is processed solely to deliver the feature you requested. According to OpenAI's API terms, data submitted through its API is not used to train OpenAI's models.

Service providers

We use a small number of carefully chosen service providers to run KjøleSmart. They process data only on our behalf and for the purposes described here:

Payments

All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive or store your payment card details. We receive only your subscription status (for example, that a subscription is active and which plan it is) so the app can unlock Pro features.

Legal bases (GDPR)

We process your personal data under the following legal bases of the EU/EEA General Data Protection Regulation:

• Performance of a contract: processing your account and content is necessary to provide the app you signed up for.
• Legitimate interests: first-party usage statistics and app improvement, balanced against your rights and freedoms.
• Consent: where you actively enable something optional, such as notification permissions handled by iOS.

International data transfers

Some of our service providers may process data outside the EU/EEA (for example, OpenAI in the United States). Where that happens, transfers are protected by recognized safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, as applicable to each provider.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time directly in the app (Profil → Slett konto). Deletion removes your account and the content associated with it, including fridge items, shopping lists, meal plans, saved recipes, preferences and activity history, from our database.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your data ("right to be forgotten")
• Receive your data in a portable format
• Object to or restrict certain processing
• Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent

To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@kjolesmart.no. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.no) or your local supervisory authority.

Security

Your data is encrypted in transit, access to the database is restricted with row-level security so each user can only access their own data, and we follow our providers' recommended security practices. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data using industry-standard measures.

Children

KjøleSmart is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update it here and adjust the "Last updated" date above. For significant changes, we will inform you in the app.
